Cal Mat Pit
|
The storage capacity of Vulcan's Cal Mat Pit makes it a potential project site. The pit currently serves as a landfill for inert debris such as concrete and bricks, but there is room to store a significant amount of runoff from the adjacent residential area as well as the upper watershed generally. With Stonehurst Park right next door, there is also the possibility of expanding its recreational space when the landfill reaches capacity. |
A 2-phase project is envisioned for this site. With some relatively minor changes to flow patterns, it could collect and hold a significant amount of runoff from the adjacent area.
The concept design for Phase 1 includes the creation of a retention basin by building a 20-foot berm across a corner of the site. Water from the areas upstream of the pit would be collected, tested, treated if necessary, and infiltrated. The proposed basin would be large enough to collect water from a large storm event, while allowing landfill operations to continue in the rest of the pit area.
|
Phase 2 would be implemented after landfill operations cease. The pit would be filled from the current depth of 80-100 feet to approximately 20 feet below street level. A permanent lake is proposed as part of a 30-acre recreation area that would also serve flood control purposes.
